This story is mentioned in the Vishnu Purana and Bhagavata Purana. According to this, when the power of the gods was weakened due to the curse given by Durvasas they asked the demons for their help. The Amrit or elixir from the cosmic ocean was supposed to be drunk by the demons to win back their powers. The Great Naga “Vasuki” was used as the rope during this process. But unfortunately one demon – Svarbhanu who was sitting between the Sun and the Moon was able to drink a few drops of the elixir.
When the Sun and Moon told this incident to Lord Vishnu, he decided to cut the demons into two halves. However, the demon had already taken a few drops, so his head and tail turned immortal. The head part was known as the Rahu while the tail part was called Ketu. Due to this legendary event in history, even today the Rahu and Ketu are after the Sun and the Moon; hence they swallow them and form the Lunar and Solar Eclipse. However, both, the Sun and the Moon, can’t remain too long under their influence as they are immortal too and when they emerge out of their effect it marks the end of the Eclipse. It is believed that Rahu and Ketu are most powerful between sunrise and sunset and create Rahu Kaal. No auspicious work has to be done during this Kaal as it will not be fulfilled.
