Ganesh Chaturthi 2025: Date, Puja Vidhi, Muhurat, History & Significance

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most important ten-day Hindu festivals, during which grand idols of Lord Ganesha are installed in homes and public pandals. This festival is not only a celebration of devotion and joy but also symbolizes wisdom, prosperity, and auspiciousness. Lord Ganesha is honored as Vighnaharta, the remover of all obstacles, and is revered as the divine symbol of wisdom and prosperity. Every auspicious work begins with Ganesh Puja, as it is believed that worshipping Him brings lasting peace and prosperity to the household.

According to popular legends, Goddess Parvati created Lord Ganesha from the sandal paste of her body and brought Him to life. When Lord Shiva failed to recognize Him and in anger beheaded Him, Parvati’s grief moved Shiva to revive Ganesha by replacing His head with that of an elephant. Thus, Ganesha became a divine form revered in all auspicious works. In the Mahabharata, too, the importance of Ganesh worship is highlighted—when Yudhishthira asked Shri Krishna how all tasks could be fulfilled, Krishna replied that worship of Parvati’s son Ganesha with proper rituals fulfills all desires.

Let’s understand in detail the key aspects related to Ganesh Chaturthi 2025.

Religious & Mythological Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi

Remover of Obstacles and Bestower of Wisdom:

Lord Ganesha is revered as the remover of all obstacles and the divine deity of wisdom, knowledge, and prosperity. It is a strong belief that worshipping Him grants intellect and discretion, ensuring success in all new beginnings. This is why any auspicious ceremony or ritual starts with Ganesh Puja.

Shiv-Parvati Legend:

As per the Puranas, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from her divine sandal paste and placed Him at her door to guard while she bathed. When Lord Shiva returned and, unaware of the circumstances, tried to enter, He was stopped by Ganesha. Angered, Shiva severed Ganesha’s head. Later, seeing Parvati’s anguish, Shiva replaced the head with that of an elephant and revived Him. This event gave Ganesha His iconic elephant-headed form.

Shamantaka Mani & Chandra Darshan Story:

It is said that once Brahma performed Ganesh Vrat, and the Moon was required to bow before Ganesha. The Moon disobeyed, and Ganesha cursed him, saying whoever sees the Moon on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi would be falsely accused. This curse caused Shri Krishna to be falsely accused of stealing the Shamantaka gem, as He saw the Moon on that day. To remove the curse, Krishna observed Siddhi Vinayak Vrat and was ultimately freed from blame. Devotees, therefore, avoid looking at the Moon on Ganesh Chaturthi, and if they do, they listen to the Shamantaka story and chant mantras for remedy.

Historical Origins & Lokmanya Tilak’s Contribution

The origins of Ganeshotsav as a public festival date back to the era of Chhatrapati Shivaji. It is believed that the renowned Kasba Ganapati temple in Pune was established by Jijabai, the mother of Shivaji Maharaj. The festival gained more prominence during the Peshwa era.

During British rule, when the Maratha empire declined, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak revived the tradition in 1893 as a public celebration. He transformed Ganeshotsav from a private religious ritual into a mass social gathering, making it a platform for freedom struggle and social unity. Lala Bhau Gangadhar Javalé established the first public Ganesh pandal in Pune. Since then, people have celebrated Ganeshotsav as a symbol of national unity and as a state festival of Maharashtra.

Ganesh Idol Installation Ritual (Puja Vidhi)

  1. Selection of Place:

Select a clean and sacred spot facing either east or north to install the idol. Decorate a holy platform (chowki) with Swastik marks using rice and turmeric.

  2. Idol & Kalash:

Choose an idol made of clay or natural materials. A white or vermilion idol with the trunk turned to the left brings auspiciousness. Spread a red or yellow cloth on the chowki and place the idol on it. Then, position a Kalash (pot) above the idol, filled with water, rice, a coconut, and mango leaves.

  3. Puja Materials:

Durva grass (especially 21 blades), vermilion, turmeric, flowers, rice, betel nut, coconut, modak/laddoo, lamp, incense, and offerings (naivedya).

  4. Mantra & Aarti:

Begin the puja by chanting “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah” and conclude with aarti and devotional songs, followed by “Ganpati Bappa Morya” chants.

Chandra Darshan Prohibition & Remedy

On Ganesh Chaturthi, seeing the Moon is believed to cause false accusations or misunderstandings. If someone accidentally sees it, listening to the Shamantaka Mani story and chanting the prescribed mantra helps nullify the effect.
